The Responsibility of Casting

We find ourselves in a time where celebrities, social media, and public opinion dictate what it is we do, wear, eat, etc. There are so many voices around us that the voice of God becomes almost as it were an afterthought. Then there is the loudest voice of all…ME. Day in and day out we fight to maintain balance in our own thoughts. Some thoughts point us in the path of righteousness and some days it points us towards a place of fleshly desire. So with all these voices and thoughts running through our mind, how do you pull down every “vain imagination” and follow the voice of God? Please note this is not just a Baltimore problem or Seattle problem, but globally Christians find themselves in a constant fight to maintain the posture that the Lord set them in.

The Bible says this, “…for the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds…(this is where I want to be)…casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ…”

We have a responsibility to cast down every thought that would take us away from the plan of God. I am not saying that it is easy…the text tells us to cast down…not gently lay it down or toss down but cast down. This implies a certain amount of force and also in a particular direction. Yes it seems elementary but how many of us actually apply the strength of this text to our lives. When thoughts arise we say, “Lord help me” or “Lord keep my mind” but have we taken responsibility for our own thoughts and cast them down, so we may clearly hear the voice of our Lord? Well child of God, if you have not been doing it or you have, but not with intensity, today is a perfect day to start again anew!

A Mind To Work

When Nehemiah was given permission by King Artaxerxes to rebuild the Jerusalem wall, he wasted no time.  Nehemiah inspected the project and gathered those who had survived the exile.  In little time the wall was half way completed because the “…the people had a mind to work” (Neh 4:6).  Battling opposition, segregation, and conspiracy Nehemiah along with the help of the people was able to complete the rebuilding of the wall in fifty-two days.  And when Jerusalem’s enemies heard of this they were afraid because they perceived that this work had been accomplished with help of God (Neh. 6:15-16).

Well in case you have not noticed, it is time to rebuild!  This can only happen if three elements are present:

  1.  Leadership has to have a heart or a “mind to work.”  Hence we see Nehemiah weeping before God about the condition of his people and the land in which they dwell.
  2. God’s approval.   Nehemiah says that he was granted what he asked and the work was completed quickly because, “the hand of God was upon him.” In other words he had God’s approval.
  3. Lastly, THE PEOPLE HAD A MIND TO WORK!

The last element is the most important part of this text.  God’s approval and a serving leader cannot accomplish anything without a people who has “a mind (heart) to do the work”.  Notice, there were no prayer meetings, no spiritual retreats, the people simply made a choice.  Everybody went to work; the high priest with his brothers; the lower priest; fathers; sons.  If there were fathers and sons working, there were women and children present too.  Some men had shovels, some had spears for security, and some had both. There is great power in unity. So let’s work together.  Even if opposition should decide to show its face, along with the help of God, there is nothing we cannot accomplish if we have A Mind To Work!
