We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed; always carrying in the body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be manifested in our bodies. (2 Cor 4:8-10).
Just the other day, the great comedian and actor Robin Williams committed suicide. Reports say that he was suffering from depression. His untimely death brought about shock to all his fans and loved ones. After hearing special report after special report on the news, I began looking at how many people commit suicide on a daily basis. Statistics show that every 15 minutes someone takes his or her own life. To save you the hassle of doing the math, every 15 minutes amounts to over 35,000 deaths a year. What is not shown in this number is that some are Christians.
If you are reading this and are contemplating taking your life, I pray that this small passage of scripture brings back life to your heart. The bible says, though we all may suffer afflictions (pain, distress, or misery), the afflictions we face are not strong enough to crush (squeeze enough to destroy form) us. Though we may be perplexed (confused) at times, the things that cause confusion, does not have the power to drive us to despair (hopelessness). If you find yourself being persecuted (harassed and oppressed), you are not forsaken (God has not ‘abandoned’ you). If you feel that the world has struck you (given you a hard blow), look at yourself, you are not destroyed (reduced to uselessness).
To some, this may sound like, ‘just another make me feel better church message’ but to he that listens, this will bring you life. The real reason none of the above-mentioned situations can over power you are because Jesus died for you! He suffered affliction, perplexity, persecution; he was stricken, and finally put to death. So we carry his death within us. But that is not how the story ends, he conquered death. Jesus got up from the place that was prepared for his death so that you and I may see the manifestation of His life in ours.
Men and women of God, I know life may seem tough right now. Please hear me, you are not alone. I write to you today, life is not over for you! Jesus has already suffered death so you would not have to. He also came back to life so you can live. The battle has already been defeated; you just have to see it through till the end. Now shake yourself (command your soul to straighten up) and LIVE!
